Reconstructive Head and Neck Surgery Chicago
After excision of head and neck cancer, many patients are left with structural and functional debilities that can interfere with body image and also the ability to carry out activities of daily living. Through plastic surgery procedures, structural and functional restoration can be achieved.
Smaller defects can be closed using sutures or closed by pulling local skin into the area of the defect. Larger defects, however, may require regional flaps of tissue to close the defect. In the neck, the pectoralis muscle can be used. In the face and mouth, free flaps (tissue separated from the body) may be used.
Depending on the location of your head or neck cancer, our surgeons will discuss the available tissue options for repair. In many cases, reconstructive surgeries may require multiple surgeries to be accomplished after your cancer has been removed.
