What Is A Mommy Makeover?
While being a mother is one of the most gratifying jobs a woman will have in her life, it is also the hardest! Bearing children can have many effects on a woman’s body, and oftentimes these changes do not resolve with time. If you’re feeling like regardless of how hard you try, you just can’t seem to get back to how you were before pregnancy, a mommy makeover could be right for you! A mommy makeover aims to restore a woman’s confidence in her body. This can mean targeting many different areas, which may differ based on your body type and how childbearing has affected you personally.
“Dr. Schierle and his team were outstanding! From the initial consultation to the final outcome, it was an extremely patient-centric and quality experience. Dr. S listened to and actioned my input and he was very sensitive to my needs. The recovery and results have been amazing. I have already recommended Dr. S and the practice in general to my friends and family. I am 1000% delighted. Thanks to the whole team and especially to Dr. S.” – Elizabeth D.
Candidates for Mommy Makeover Surgery
If you are interested in improving the contours of your body after pregnancy and breastfeeding, you may be a good candidate for a mommy makeover. Surgeons generally advise women interested in this series of procedures to quit smoking, if they do smoke, and to attend to their general health and wellness. The stronger and healthier the body is before surgery, the better it will heal after the nips and tucks of the mommy makeover.
Mommy Makeover Procedures
Common procedures performed in a mommy makeover consist of:
- Breast Lift
- Breast Augmentation
- Breast Reduction
- Tummy Tuck
Breast lift, or mastopexy, is designed to recreate the appearance of firm and more youthful breasts. After childbirth and breastfeeding, a woman’s breasts can lose their elasticity and firmness, a condition also known as ptosis. A breast lift won’t significantly change the size of your breasts. However, a breast lift can be done in combination with breast augmentation or breast reduction.
When fuller, rounder breasts are the goal, a combination breast lift and breast augmentation surgery may be necessary. There are several methods available for breast augmentation, including saline and silicone implants, as well as autologous fat transfer (fat grafting). Depending on the specific problems, a breast lift procedure may consist of one or multiple discrete procedures:
- Tighten skin to eliminate the sagging effect
- Reduce the size of the areola to keep them in proportion
- Move the nipple higher up on the breast
Techniques for a breast lift:
There are several common techniques that may be utilized during a breast lift procedure. The size and shape of your breasts, size of your areolas, extent of sagging, and the desired outcome of the patient are factors that will help Dr. Schierle and Dr. Fine determine the best technique for you. Incisions may be made in one of three ways:
- Around the areola
- Vertically downward the areola
- Horizontal beneath the breast
Breast augmentation may be performed as part of the mommy makeover with or without a breast lift. Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a very popular and common procedure that can increase your breast size and give you back that voluminous appearance that you may have had before childbirth. By surgically inserting breast implants beneath the chest muscle during breast augmentation, women can achieve larger, shapelier, “pre-mommy” breasts. During your breast augmentation consultation, you’ll learn more about your options for creating your ideal breast appearance, including:
- Implant size, style, and shape
- Implant material (silicone, gel or saline)
- Implant position (preferred method below the pectoralis muscle)
- Implant incision site
When smaller breasts are the goal, a combination breast lift and breast reduction may be recommended for the mommy makeover experience. During the breast lift procedure, extra breast tissue will be removed. The remaining tissue and skin will then be lifted and firmed. There are several common techniques that may be utilized during a breast reduction procedure. The size and shape of your breasts, size of your areolas, and the desired reduction amount of the patient are factors that will help your surgeon determine the best technique for you. Incisions may be made in one of three ways:
- Around the areola
- Vertically downward the areola
- Horizontal beneath the breast
After the surgeon has removed excess breast tissue, fat and skin, the nipple and areola are shifted to a higher position. The areola, which in large breasts usually has been stretched, also is reduced in size. Skin that was formerly located above the nipple is brought down and together to reshape the breast. Whether your individual mommy makeover consists of a breast lift, breast augmentation, breast reduction, or a combination of these, your surgeon will discuss beforehand with you which method to utilize for your desired outcome and individual circumstance.
Tummy Tuck and Liposuction
After childbirth, one area that is nearly always affected is a woman’s abdomen. Pregnancy can stretch or separate abdominal muscles, causing excess skin and fat across the abdomen that is resistant to diet and exercise. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and skin from the stomach.
It will also tighten weakened and loose abdominal muscles to give the stomach a flatter, firmer appearance. During the procedure, an incision is made in the lower abdominal region, allowing the surgeon to repair the muscles that comprise the abdominal wall and remove excess fat, tissue, and skin. Liposuction may be utilized to remove excess fat during a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck is part of our mommy makeover because it will:
- Tighten excess skin to eliminate loose and sagging skin
- Tighten the underlying abdominal muscles to create a firmer abdominal wall
- Remove excess fat to eliminate a protruding tummy
Techniques For A Tummy Tuck:
There are many variations both to the design of the incisions and the technique itself. In some instances, it may be possible to avoid an incision around the navel. When the amount of loose skin is minimal and the excess fat deposits are located below the navel, a lower incision is all that is necessary. This procedure is called a partial, or “mini,” tummy tuck. This may be enough for some moms! Sometimes liposuction may be used alone, or in conjunction with tummy tuck, to remove abdominal fat.
A tummy tuck may be performed on an outpatient basis. If this is the case, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and to stay with you for at least the next day or two. When tummy tuck surgery is performed in conjunction with medically necessary procedures such as hysterectomy or hernia repair, a short hospitalization may be required. You may be permitted to go home after a few hours, unless you and your surgeon have determined that you will stay in the hospital or surgical facility overnight.
Mommy Makeover Before & After
Mommy Makeover Recovery
Recovery from a mommy makeover begins in the surgery center with a qualified nursing staff overseeing patient wellness as the anesthesia wears off. The nursing staff ensures that, as the effects of anesthesia diminish, appropriate measures for pain management are taken. At home, healing continues for approximately 14 days with the use of medication to manage comfort. In addition to oral pain medication, patients may also be prescribed muscle relaxants to offset the tightness that is felt after abdominoplasty. Many patients stop their prescription medications within the first week, and some return to work (light-duty) within two weeks of their makeover. Heavy lifting and more rigorous activity should not be resumed until cleared by the surgeon.
There is no rush to get back to a regular routine. The primary focus of recovery is to rest as much as needed to enable the body to heal fully.
If breast implants are involved in the mommy makeover, gentle breast massage may also begin during the recovery phase of treatment. Patients will also wear compression garments to control swelling and discomfort.
Our team is available to answer any questions that arise during mommy makeover recovery. Follow-up visits are scheduled accordingly to observe progress and perform essential tasks such as removing drains, if necessary.
How long after having my last baby should I wait to have a mommy makeover?
The body will “bounce back” to a certain degree after pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. It is advisable to wait a few months to observe how much skin retraction and weight loss will occur both on their own and with the help of healthy food and regular exercise. Furthermore, a mommy makeover should be scheduled well after breastfeeding has stopped. This way, it is possible to accurately measure how much volume needs to be restored and whether or not a breast lift is necessary.
If I still plan to have children, should I consider a mommy makeover now?
It is possible to have a mommy makeover and still have a healthy pregnancy in the future. However, surgeons encourage women to schedule the body-contouring aspects of a mommy makeover only after they are quite sure they do not plan to have more children. The results of breast augmentation and lifting may not be disrupted to a large degree by subsequent pregnancies, but what has been achieved with liposuction and abdominoplasty might be severely diminished due to the effects of abdominal stretching during pregnancy.
Why is it best to have these procedures at one time instead of individually?
Having individual procedures to address the various effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding is possible and doing so might seem to minimize recovery time. However, when we combine procedures, the recovery phase is lumped into one period of a few weeks. That means less time off work and less time away from day-to-day family obligations and other activities. Furthermore, there is something really gratifying about seeing the compilation of a body makeover all at once.
