What is this PRP thing that everyone is raving about?

Anti-aging treatments are the most sought out cosmetic procedures. Patients are always looking for a new effective procedure with minimal downtime and long-lasting results. Protein- rich plasma, or PRP, is the latest craze in the aesthetic world. Kim Kardashian put a spotlight on this procedure when her blood-tinged selfie went viral. We are hearing a lot of buzz about this new amazing treatment, but what exactly is PRP?
PRP is a high concentration of platelets surrounded in plasma. It contains at least 8 essential growth factors and signaling proteins, which are essential in creating new collagen and elastin fibers. PRP is typically coupled with microneedling and laser treatments (such as the Halo) to help reduce signs of aging by softening wrinkles, decreasing pore size, improving skin laxity, and minimizing the appearance of scars.
Microneedling and laser treatments have been highly effective anti-aging staples in aesthetic treatments for years. The addition of PRP to these treatments enhances those results even further. The PRP is applied directly to the channels created from the micro-needling or laser treatment. The additional growth factors from the PRP work synergistically with the collagen created by microneedling and laser treatments. The two therapies together lead to accelerated results and even more rapid collagen remodeling than each one is capable of alone.
PRP is also currently being used for hair loss. Because PRP is rich with growth factors, it promotes rapid cell growth and hair restoration. PRP helps by pushing the resting hair follicles back into the active growing phase. PRP hair loss treatments can help whether you suffer from mild thinning or more excessive shedding that can be seen with post-partum hair loss.
PRP is extremely simple to add on to your microneedling and laser treatments. A small blood sample is taken and put into a centrifuge. After about 15 minutes of spinning, the necessary growth factors have been separated from the rest of the blood. This liquid gold is what is applied to the face. Collagen production usually takes about 4-8 weeks. You will continue to see improvements over time, but it is well worth the wait!
